A Guide to Sustainable Development

Promote Accessibility and Choice of Mobility.

Develop for moving people, not for moving cars. This approach will foster transit, and petroleum-based alternatives to transportation, lowering VMT and GHG while promoting healthy lifestyles.

Best Practice Examples

  • Lake Merritt Station Area Plan, Oakland -- As part of their Great Communities Collaborative initiative, Bay Area nonprofit TransForm is working with local stakeholders and the City of Oakland to inlock the Lake Merritt station area's strong potential as a new model for a transit-oriented, walkable community in the region. The Specific Plan will seek to better connect the Lake Merritt Bart Station area to the surrounding neighborhood, and to the region as a whole. • Sustainable Transportation Planning, Sacramento -- Reducing Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) through integrated design strategies and regional transportation planning is key to fostering sustainable communities.
