UrbanPlan offers a 15-hour curriculum that has been embraced by educators in traditional public high schools and universities because it employs the best practices of project-based learning. This curriculum aligns with state and national content standards for high school economics and provides a much-needed local government component to the government curriculum. ULI District Councils have successfully implemented UrbanPlan in local schools across the country, proving the program is both scalable and sustainable.
Throughout the program ULI volunteers interact frequently with the student teams. As team facilitators, they challenge the students to think critically about the issues and the responsibilities required of their specific roles. As presenters, they relate their own local projects to the issues and decisions with which the students are struggling. Finally, as jurors, they judge the content of each team’s plan and select a winning proposal that best meets the development criteria.
