UrbanPlan is an academically challenging classroom-based program that gives high school and college students the chance to study the issues and economics of urban development. It provides students with hands-on experience developing realistic solutions to complex urban growth challenges by taking part in a simulated planning process.
The mission of UrbanPlan is to encourage a sophisticated level of discourse among local stakeholders involved in land use decisions through the education of tomorrow's voters, neighbors, community lenders, public officials, and land use professionals, so together, we can create better communities.
This ULI program was rigorously field-tested for two years by economics and government teachers in five traditional California public high schools with over 700 high school juniors and seniors. Additionally, U.C. Berkeley graduate and undergraduate programs in architecture and real estate are using UrbanPlan because of the sophistication of the curriculum. Feedback from students, teachers, and land use professionals has produced a program that is highly engaging and rewarding for all participants—students, teachers, and ULI land use professionals.
The program has more than doubled in the last three years, and has served over 2000 high school and college students in 55 Bay Area classrooms since 2003.
